In the beginning
27
Drawing, a love affair.
Let me begin by telling you about what was probably my first artistic endeavor. I was three years old. The house had just been decorated and for the first time in their young married lives my Mum and Dad had scraped up enough money to buy some brand new furniture. Fatefully they also bought me a pack of felt-tipped pens. I decided to put them to good use immediately (I had a few decorating ideas of my own). I proceeded to draw all over the new furniture and those freshly painted walls must have been just crying out for embellishment. I expanded my masterpiece to include the stair walls and bannisters, muralating the landing and ending with a flourish all over my parents bedspread.
On discovering my obvious talent my Mum took herself into the garden and smashed every single flower pot. I owe my life to terracotta.
This was, I’m sure, the beginnings of my love for drawing. To this day there’s nothing quite like a brand new pack of pens or pencils and a virgin surface. I know I’m not alone, who doesn’t feel the thrill of a stationery shop? The simple joy of making a mark or using colour even just to write our own names must go back to beginning of humankind’s history.
