Lifedrawing and Dwarves

I went to a life drawing class that has left me thinking. I was especially interested this particular week because the model was a dwarf. It wasn’t just me, there was a high turn out. Who wouldn’t be interested to see a dwarf in the nude? I must admit I felt really giggly and highly amused at the whole idea. I relished the idea in advance of being asked “how was lifedrawing this week?”….

During the class something happened though. By him stripping off for us, I felt disarmed and as I drew him he became more and more a real person, not just ‘a dwarf’. He was amazing to draw, there was no relying on taught formulas of proportion we had to really look and see.

Since then I’ve noticed that ad on TV with the action dwarf, it seems to me that there’s no point to the dwarf being in it except that he looks funny. It’s got me thinking about how dwarves feel about being such a form of amusement. Is it ok to laugh at them? Someone once said to me “Dwarves. Lucky b******s, they’ll always have a job in show business”. I feel differently now I’ve had the privilege to draw one.

It’s also made me wonder about the idea of nakedness as a positive tool for humanity, if all the politicians and diplomats conducted their business in the nude would they feel more sympathy for each other through the recognition of our fragile humaness? or would it just be distracting and a bit chilly?
