Return to the hand-made

Has anyone else noticed that drawing is suddenly being used everywhere? I’ve been watching the movement gathering momentum with great excitement as advertising goes artisan. I think some of the most creative work ever is being done right now. The “connecting people” map in the Nokia advert, the retro etch-a-sketch mini and the VW polo advert are just brimming with creativity.

These companies are tapping into a general yearning for simplicity that seems to be creeping over the country. As the world gets faster and more complicated there is a shift away from technology and towards the hand-made, something more human that touches our souls. It’s as if we’re over the seduction of technology and see it for what it is; a tool. We’re beginning to get back in touch with the human being and all that we can achieve with our imaginations and skill. It’s not that we want to smash our computers, stamp on our blackberries and never look at the internet again, it’s more that we want to reclaim these technologies on our terms.
